My father has bought a \'54 Lyman and it\'s for us to restore together. I guess he wants to bond some more. She\'s a beautiful old boat and I think it will not only be fun to do but also a learning experience for us both. It doesn\'t really need alot, aside from bringing her back to a full shine. All the upholstery is fine, the engine was just rebuilt, and the wood is in good shape. Only thing I see that may present a problem is that it sits so high on the trailer that we\'ll need an immediate 10 feet of water to get her off it. Other than that it\'s gonna be fun and from what I\'ve read we\'ll be the star of the lakes with her!

Just saw your Lyman site, very nice!! We have a 1970, 30' Islander in Florida. I moved from Ohio eight years ago. Boated in the western basin of Erie for 30 years. Grew up on a 1967 26' cruisette. I've been hooked a long time. Will attempt to send a photo or two, The Joy Toy has been completely referbished and re-powered!

Nice interesting web site with lots of good info. I've been in the boating business for 50 years and I currently have a 1974 fiberglass Lyman Biscayne that I picked up a year ago from the original owner. It's in good condition has 450 hrd running time on the boat and the engine has a CC 307Q 200 hp V8 waiting to get back from the sand blasting shop so I can get the bottom painted and put in the water. I really enjoy these boats as I have owned several Lymans over the years.

I just bought a Lyman at an auction yesterday (my second). It's 16', with no windshield, and is center steer. I'm told it's early 50's. (??) It's solid - with a trailer. Just needs cleaning up - and a motor.....(details). How can I figure out what year this boat is? Thanks!

Has anyone ever made a list of Lymans in the movies? The ski boat destroyed in "Jaws 2" may have been a Lyman and the boat James Bond escaped from in "The island of Dr. No" (Crab Key) appears to be an Islander. It would be interesting to see a list, and screen shots, of any Lymans that have had their moment of glory in Hollywood!

Love your web site. I grew up in NH with a 50's era center steer with a split back seat in front. I always thought it was 15 to 16 ft but most of the center steers I see here are 13 ft. We had a neighbor with a similar model that was 2 ft longer. Have lots of great memories with that boat. Thanks.

We\'ve owned our 1954 18\' Islander, \"Driftwood\", since 1983. We use it to enjoy sunrises and sunsets on Richardson Lake, in the Western Mountains of Maine. It is the last of the straight inboards remaining on the lake. It has a Chris-Craft Model B engine with a minor rebuild and a major overhaul three years ago,and has given us hours and hours of fun and faithful performance and service!

i acquired my lyman by cruising through huntington harbour in huntington bch, ca. it\'s an 18\' side steer islander. it was on a private dock with a big sign on it \"free boat\". i couldn\'t resist. we signed the pink slip over and i towed it away; that night it sunk. i\'ve only had it for 2 months and i\'m about halfway done restoring it. it was in bad shape. luckily all the parts were there. i\'ve taken lots of photos from start to current. and i\'ll be sure to share with the rest of you soon. this is a fine web page and as a new lyman team member i enjoy reading all the stories.

I restored a couple boats in my day and didnt take one photo, regretably. My next project (a Lyman) will be well documented.

The only change I would make to your site is I would include more photos illustrating all the Lyman models throughout the years and more restoration progress photos.

Lymans are plentiful on the bottem of the St. Lawrence River. The gentleman below this post shouldnt feel alone. Hackers, Chris Crafts and Hutchinsons also have met the river bottom. Many many other boats too. 120\' to 6\" of water depth within a 50\' distance is not unusual there. Sunken islands are rediscovered there every year by the transient boaters, yachtsmen and commercial skippers that stray from the river\'s navigation channels. Many a sailing ship, merchant and military, went down over the years as well and many wrecks are still uncharted or not even found yet. Many mysteries remain in that incredibly beautiful part of the world. Its a serious boater\'s paradise for sure.

free Lyman boat: 1968 23\' cuddy runabout, presently located 112 feet below the St Lawrence River surface near Clayton NY. We hit a shoal in what I thought was familiar waters and it broke through between frames (if it hit at the frame it wouldnt have been damaged, I believe). We were moving along at a pretty good clip when we hit and the water just forced in quickly and we lost the \"Miss Christine\" in about 20 to 30 minutes. Luckily all aboard were fine but we lost everything aboard including our personel items and a 2 year old Honda outboard that I just picked up from a tuneup. Anyway, we decided we wont go get her and we\'re giving up boating at this point. The cold water in the darkness after a collision like that is enough to retire from this. Im sick that after owning and caring for this boat since new that this is how it has ended. It could of been worse and we are greatful but we decided to let her rest there or leave it for someone else to fiddle with. A new engine was installed in \'94 and the boat was yard maintained since new and always in fresh water. The new bright white canvas should make her easy to find. At 72 years old now Im just not able to go any further with this. At least we have wonderful memories from her now. My wife tells this story as just another one of our cruising adventures but I lost my best friend.

My family has had two Lymans over the last 30 years, I now have one of them, a 1962 20' with 100 h.p. Interceptor / Eaton I/O power. We trailer it all over Michigan and enjoy it with our friends. It is a work in progress, as probably most wooded boats are, and it gets sharper every year. B.K.
